About Vidya Vara
Vidya Vara is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with experience/education/credentials in many areas of counseling practice. Vidya has a Masters degree in counseling, with additional credentials as a child mental health specialist, and ethnic minority mental health specialist. She has many hours of trainings in older adult (geriatric) mental health, GLBTQ mental health and in motivational interviewing. She practices CBT and Systems therapy (an individual is part of the systems that s/he is embedded in). Her experience encompasses many areas that include parent-child relationships, couples relationships, parenting, grief, loss and illness -issues that most people encounter as they go through life. Her work experience includes working in settings such as community mental health, chemical dependency, geriatric mental health, hospital emergency rooms, a federal prison, classrooms etc. She worked with children and their families and due to her experience in many areas of practice she brings a holistic perspective to her understanding of concerns that are brought to the clinical sessions by her clients, and attendees at her training events. She does not provide services to children or couples in her current practice.
In her many years of work she has skillfully worked with mental health diagnoses such as Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, PTSD, Adjustment Disorders, Mood and Impulse Control Disorders. She continually engages in challenging the clients to move towards their goals by seeking their participation in practicing the strategies discussed during sessions. Helping client/s identify goals is the very first step in determining and delivering the right treatment. Enhancing one's ability to manage future challenges is more important as a goal than to eliminate challenges in one's life as the challenges are a constant in today's changing world.
Vidya has been practicing psychotherapy for close to 30 years, with compassion, understanding and a results-driven approach. In her practice, she combines cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems orientation, and object relations theories along with mind-body approaches such as mindful breathing, guided imagery, self-hypnosis etc.
Vidya is a member of the following professional associations:

2. WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health)
