Counseling ethnic minority clients does not always follow the mainstream path. This is due to the themes of acculturation and integration being at different levels for different individuals. Individuals who want to be fully acculturated in order to benefit from the rewards that it could bestow may also feel a sense of lack of healthy identity as such acculturation may not provide a sense of integration. Exploring such themes could help the individual to understand themselves and to develop an identity based on accepting their choices while feeling connected to their own ethnic community. Understanding why one makes the choices they make, exploring the benefits as well as the underlying worries that play at a conscious or subconscious level for following the chosen path are necessary components of developing an integrated self. Helping you engage in this journey is part of the process of counseling while working with DSM 5 based diagnoses.
